Kayaking in the Finnish Archipelago – a journey into nature and yourself
I still remember my first time kayaking. It was over 20 years ago, and to be honest, it didn’t start that well. I had seen people glide effortlessly across the water, looking peaceful and in control. My experience? Well, the introduction course to kayaking was held on a rainy and cold May weekend. I spent more time freezing and trying to find out how to hold the paddle than actually moving forward.
But something about it hooked me immediately. The rhythm of the strokes, the way the kayak became one with the sea, the absolute calmness of floating on water. It felt like I had stepped into a completely different world, one where time slows down and nature wraps around you like a warm embrace.
And that’s the thing about kayaking in the Finnish Archipelago: it’s not just an activity, it’s an experience.
Our archipelago – a paradise best explored from the water
Houtskär and the surrounding archipelago is a dream for nature lovers. Here, the sea isn’t just a body of water, it’s a way of life. The landscape is a breathtaking mix of thousands of small islands, rocky shores, and endless open waters. Some islands are lush and green, others are smooth granite formations shaped by the ice age.
Kayaking here means gliding through narrow straits where you might meet birds hiding in the reeds. It means silently approaching a hidden bay, where only the whisper of the wind and the distant calls of seabirds break the silence. It means paddling under a clear sky with bright stars. The feeling of being on the sea in a kayak makes you feel small in the best possible way.
There is something magical about exploring the archipelago from a kayak. Unlike boats, kayaks let you move quietly and slowly, without disturbing the nature. You become part of the surroundings instead of just passing through.

Why kayaking is good for you?
Sure, kayaking is fun. But did you know it’s also really good for you? In my opinion because of:
- Great exercise, no gym needed
Kayaking is a full-body workout, but it doesn’t feel like one. While you paddle, you strengthen your arms, shoulders, back, and core—without even realising it. And what I have heard from my kayaking friends, it really is good for lower back pain. - Stress relief like no other
There’s something deeply calming about the repetitive motion of paddling. The water, the fresh air, and the rhythmic strokes work together like a natural meditation. - A front-row seat to nature’s show
Kayaking puts you right in the middle of nature, especially in spring, when the migrating birds are on the move, and in autumn, when the jellyfish appear (they are harmless). You get to experience the water in a way no motorboat can offer, up close and personal with the elements. - Unplugging and reconnecting
In a world filled with screens and notifications, kayaking is a perfect excuse to disconnect. No Internet, no distractions, just you, the sea, and your thoughts.
New to kayaking? Here’s why you should try it!
If you’ve never kayaked before, you might think, “What if I tip over?” or “What if I end up in Åland by accident?” Both might be valid concerns, but to my experience, kayaking is easier than it looks, and incredibly rewarding once you get the hang of it.
We offer kayak rentals for those who want to explore on their own and private guided tours for those who prefer a little more guidance.

A real story: The love story of two paddlers
Speaking of unforgettable experiences, let me tell you a story about how kayaking (well maybe something else too) changed two lives forever.
It all started during the pandemic. Like so many people, these two people had been navigating the weird world of lockdowns. They met online, and after months of chatting, they decided to finally meet in real life. After walking together for months (of course with a safe distance), they wanted to do something different.
That’s how they ended up here, at Hotel Hyppeis, on a guided kayaking vacation.
At first, they were a little bit nervous. Neither of them had never been in a kayak before, and they weren’t sure if they wanted to go kayaking with someone they just met. But from the moment they pushed off from the shore, something just clicked.
Together, they explored the archipelago, stopping on tiny islands for picnic lunch. They helped each other through the windier stretches, and somewhere along the way, they realized that this wasn’t just a holiday—it was the start of something much bigger.
Fast forward to today: This couple just got married. And do you know where they came every summer? Right here, to the same place where they first kayaked together.
So yes, kayaking might seem like just an outdoor activity. But who knows? It might just lead you to the love of your life.
Are you ready to experience the magic of kayaking?
Kayaking in the Finnish archipelago is something everyone should try at least once. It’s more than just paddling. It’s about feeling free, slowing down, and reconnecting with nature and yourself.
