5 reasons why the Finnish Archipelago should be on your bucket list
While Finnish Lapland may be having its moment in the spotlight, with reindeer selfies, visits to Santa Claus, and bustling airports, let me introduce you to a more quiet part of Finland with no chaos, just beautiful landscapes, unique and untouched nature, and a pace of life that lets you truly breathe: The Archipelago.
If you’ve been dreaming of a place where time slows down and and where every moment feels like a deep breath of fresh air, the Finnish Archipelago is your answer. Here’s why this hidden gem deserves a spot on your bucket list.
1. A hidden gem near the city of Turku
Just a short journey from Turku, the gateway to Finland’s southwest, lies the archipelago, a labyrinth of over 40,000 islands and islets scattered across the Baltic Sea. Turku is one of my favourite cities with charming mix of history, culture, culinary delights, and urban life. Archipelago on the other hand, is a place where the rhythm of slow living dictates the pace of life and where my blood pressure drops.
From Turku, you can start your journey to the Archipelago on the Archipelago Trail, a scenic route that winds through bridges, ferries, and small island villages Nauvo, Korppoo and Iniö. The journey itself is part of the charm, with every turn revealing something new to explore.
Whether you’re cycling, driving, or simply wandering, the trail offers endless opportunities to stop, explore, and soak in the beauty of the islands. And trust me, every stop feels like a little slice of paradise.
2. Nature in its purest form
The archipelago isn’t just beautiful, it’s breathtaking. The first time I visited the archipelago, I not only fell in love with the stunning surroundings but also with the guy who brought me there. Fast forward almost 30 years, and that guy is now my husband. And the archipelago? Still as magical as ever.
Picture this: calm seas reflecting the pastel hues of a summer sunset, the gentle rustle of birch trees in the breeze, and an endless horizon dotted with islands. In autumn, the landscape transforms into a canvas of beautiful colors of red and orange, while spring brings new life, light green buds on trees, wildflowers pushing through the ground, and migrating birds filling the air with their calls.
This is a place where nature invites you to slow down. Go kayaking in the calm waters, take a hike in the forest, or simply sit by the sea and let the peacefulness fill your soul. And don’t forget to try a sauna, there’s no better way to connect with the Finnish culture. Maybe you want to know more about the sauna culture? You’re welcome to try out our Authentic Finnish Seaside Sauna Experience. You can book it from Saaristo.fi site.
3. Authentic Finnish life
One of my favorite things about the archipelago is its authenticity. There are no tourist traps here, just real people living real lives. Driving along the roads you’ll meet local farmers with their tractors, you’ll see people on the fields picking up the first potatoes, or just locals chatting outside the grocery store without any stress. And then there’s the food! If you love locally produced food, you’re in for a treat. Fish and meat are often served with potatoes grown right on the islands, and everything is made from scratch in our own kitchen. It’s simple, it’s locally produced, and it’s delicious. Our chefs are talented and passioned about their work, so you and your stomach will be happy after eating with us.
”The rays of sunshine, the singing birds, clear streams, the cherry blossoms in spring, and the beauty of the four seasons — it’s all there for you. And, if you can’t see or hear it, it’s because your mind is too full.”
Thich Nhat Hanh
4. A destination for every season
While the Archipelago truly shines in the summer with its long days and vibrant summer life, spring and autumn have their own unique magic, making them just as perfect for travelers us summer.
Spring: A season of renewal and hope
When May arrives, the archipelago awakens from its winter slumber. The air is crisp, yet the warmth of the returning sun is unmistakable. Trees burst into life with their first light-green leaves, flowers push through the snow (if there’s any), and migrating birds return to their summer homes, filling the islands with their cheerful songs.
Spring is the perfect time for peaceful walks, listening to nature’s symphony, or joining our Forest and Sea Bath experience (you can book it from Saaristo.fi) to truly reconnect with yourself and your surroundings.
Autumn: A time of reflection and warmth
As the summer season winds down and September rolls in, the archipelago takes on a quieter, more introspective mood. Our once-busy harbour becomes still, the air becomes cooler, and the landscape is painted with colors of red, orange, and yellow.
It’s a season for cozy moments: sipping coffee while gazing out over the sea, soaking in a sauna. Autumn in the archipelago is a time to slow down, reflect, and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Or if your are looking for more active holiday, you can go leisurely kayaking to explore the islands nearby. I don’t know anything better than taking the kayak out on a misty morning or in the moonlight. Kayak tours can be book at Saaristo.fi.
Winter: A quiet pause
Though our hotel is closed in the winter, the archipelago remains a haven of peace and beauty. Hopefully frozen sea and long starry nights create an atmosphere of stillness and wonder. For us, winter is a time to focus on other projects, dream up new ideas, and prepare to welcome you back when the islands bloom again in spring.
5. A Place to reconnect
I think that the Finnish Archipelago isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a place to reconnect. Whether it’s reconnecting with nature, your loved ones, or even yourself, the islands have a way of grounding you.
In a world that’s constantly moving, where notifications, emails, and endless scrolling pull us in every direction, the archipelago offers something rare: the chance to disconnect.
With limited distractions, you can finally focus on what truly matters, meaningful conversations, long walks in nature, or simply the joy of being present. The Finnish Archipelago reminds us to pause, breathe, and appreciate the simple things in life.
So, why should the Finnish Archipelago be on your bucket list? Because it’s more than a destination, it’s an experience. A chance to step off the beaten path, discover beauty in simplicity, and create memories that linger long after you’ve left.
One thing is certain: the archipelago will leave a mark on your heart.
Pack your bags, book your flight, and come see for yourself. The Finnish Archipelago and we at Hotel Hyppeis are waiting to welcome you.
Have a great day!
