Have you ever wondered what the Finnish archipelago sounds like? Inspired by a recent concert in Turku, I found myself imagining the seasons of the archipelago as a symphony. Join me on this melodic journey, where summer hums with Vivaldi’s joy, autumn whispers Rachmaninov’s melancholy, winter embraces Beethoven’s stillness, and spring awakens with Dvořák’s hope. Let the archipelago’s natural orchestra take you on an unforgettable adventure. Here’s my take on what the archipelago seasons would sound like if a symphony orchestra played them.
Summer – Vivaldi’s “Spring” (Yes, it works for summer too!)
I know, technically, this is Vivaldi’s Spring from his famous Fours Seasons, but let me explain why I picked it. This piece is full of joy and movement – just like the archipelago in summer. The light melodies of the violins remind me of the bustle of life: boats moving on the sea, people laughing on the shore, and sunny days stretching late into the night.
Summer in the archipelago is full of joy and celebration. The water is just warm enough for a swim (if you’re brave enough), the air smells of salt and sunscreen, and somewhere, there’s always something delicious being barbecued. Summer is vibrant, full of life, and carefree holiday moments. Vivaldi’s lively melody captures this summery atmosphere perfectly.
Autumn – Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise”
As the leaves turn orange red and the water temperature droppes, the archipelago is bathed in a bittersweet beauty. Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise feels like autumn – heartbreakingly beautiful and slightly melancholic.
This is a time of goodbyes. The tourist crowds dwindle, most of the cottage owners close up their summer houses, and the birds head south. Autumn storms arrive, and the sea shifts from sparkling blue to a deep, stormy grey. Despite the melancholy, the archipelago slowly returns to its quiet, serene self, with its own comforting beauty.
Winter – Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata”
Ah, winter! The season when the archipelago sinks into darkness and silence so deep you can hear your own heartbeat. Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonara fits perfectly with this mood. It’s calm, introspective, and a little eerie – much like a starry winter night and the frozen sea.
But winter isn’t all about loneliness. There’s still plenty going on as locals engage in hobbies, meet up with each other, and take part in winter events. And yes, sometimes it snows “wet” snow (not Japan-like powder snow), and the wind howls so loudly it feels like the roof might fly off (and it has actually happened). But there’s something incredibly comforting about the slow pace of winter life and being inside, reading a book in front of the fireplace.
Spring – Dvořák’s “Symphony No. 9, From the New World” (Largo)
When spring arrives in the archipelago, it feels like the whole world is waking up from a long nap. Dvořák’s Largo from Symphony No. 9 is full of hope, and isn’t that exactly what spring is? The soft, sweeping tones are the perfect backdrop to the first green shoots poking through the earth, the return of the birds, and the gentle awakening off life in the archipelago.
Spring is full of small miracles – crocuses peeking up from the soil, the sea breaking free from its ice cover, and the days getting longer each day. There’s a feeling of anticipation, a promise that summer will return. Dvořák’s music captures this sense of new beginnings so well that it feels as though he must have visited the archipelago himself.
There you have it: The symphony of the Turku archipelago by some well-known composers. And if classical music isn’t your thing, I’ve heard nature has a pretty good playlist too. Whether it’s the joyful energy of summer, the bittersweet beauty of autumn, the deep peace of winter, or the hopeful awakening of spring, the islands have their own rhythm that’s unlike anything else. I hope you’ll hear the music while visiting our beautiful archipelago.
Warm regards,
Outi
As the last hotel guests check out and the last wellness retreat has come to an end, we find ourselves saying goodbye to another beautiful summer at Hotel Hyppeis. The island is quieter now, and you can almost hear the trees exhale after a busy season. While most people pack away their summer clothes, we’re packing away garden chairs, tidying up the terraces, emptying fridges and making sure that our beloved old building is ready for a long winter nap. But what happens when an island hotel “closes for the season”? Spoiler alert: It’s not all about sleeping and relaxing, though there is a lot of that too!
First off, let’s talk about winter preparations. It’s not just flipping a switch and saying “See you next year.” Oh no. We’re more like squirrels, busy gathering and storing things away, except instead of acorns, it’s outdoor furniture, laundry and apples from the garden. The boats are brought up onto dry land and stored after we have cleaned them up.
One of the quirks of island life is how the landscape changes drastically with the seasons. During the summer, the archipelago is like a buzzing beehive—people who have summer cottages on the island, tourists, boats, and summer events are everywhere. But once autumn hits, everything slows down. The sea turns a steely blue, the days get shorter, and there’s this crisp silence that settles in. It’s almost as if nature itself is telling us, “Take a break you’ve earned it.” And we listen.
When winter comes, some of the islanders do things a little bit differently. Some people head to the mainland for work or school, but many of us stay, embracing the slow pace of life. Here on Houtskär, there’s a sense of community that’s unique during the colder months. Local events, hobbies and game evenings become our social events. Honestly, winter is when we catch up with our neighbours and share stories, and maybe a bottle of wine too.
For us at Hotel Hyppeis, winter is also a time to plan. While the hotel may be closed, our minds are already on next year – chefs, new menu ideas, retreats, painting the walls, redecorating the rooms. It’s all about making sure that when the spring sun returns, we’re ready to welcome you back with open arms.
Though we’re no longer buzzing with guests, nature is far from shutting down. In fact, the Finnish archipelago is stunning in autumn and winter too. Think about misty mornings, fiery sunsets that light up the whole sky, and starry nights so clear you could get lost just by looking up. The sounds in the nature change too — fewer birds, but more peaceful walks through the woods, where the only sounds are your boots crunching on fallen leaves.
And then there’s the sea. During the summer, it’s a lively place, full of boats. But in winter, it becomes something else entirely—calm, reflective, and, quite frankly, a bit mysterious and frightening. We won’t see many people out on the sea, but if we’re lucky, we might spot white-tailed eagles soaring above. It’s moments like these that remind us why we love living here, even when the days get short and the the darkness comes.
So, as we lock the doors for the season, we want to thank you all — our wonderful guests, followers, and friends. Every summer, you remind us why we do what we do, and this year has been no different. Whether you came for a holiday, weekend retreat, a cozy dinner, or just a coffee with that unbeatable sea view, we’re grateful to have shared this little piece of paradise with you.
As winter approaches, we’ll be keeping the fire going (literally and figuratively) here on the island, dreaming of next summer and planning new ways to make your next visit even more special.
Until then, enjoy the fall, stay warm, and don’t forget to dream about next summer!
Warm regards,
Outi and Sam

At Hotel and restaurant Hyppeis Värdshus we like to think that we’re not just as a picturesque retreat, but also a culinary destination. According to the feedback we’ve gotten from our customers during the years, we are not alone in our thoughts. Let me tell you a true story: A couple from Helsinki drove back and forth on one day to our place, just to have dinner in our restaurant!
Why did they do so? What brings people to our place every summer? We believe it’s the fact that in our cosy restaurant we offer a unique food concept, that captivates both gastronomy enthusiasts and casual diners alike. From midsummer until the end of August our kitchen becomes a stage for a weekly changing roster of chefs, each bringing their unique flair and vision to our menu.
The innovative chef rotation concept was born out of a simple yet brilliant suggestion by a friend. Why not have multiple chefs, each taking turns to lead the kitchen for a week? This idea quickly took off, starting with just four chefs during the first summer, and has grown to include nine chefs this season, some of whom are returning for their second or third summer, but we also have some “newbies”.
A pioneer among our chefs is Johannes Berlin, who has been with us from the start. Our friendship started from a sailing trip Sam was doing with his friends. Johannes was serving the best sandwiches ever Sam told me when he came home. The rest is history. Johannes has helped spearhead the concept, and through his wide professional network we have found the visiting chefs. Johannes has also grown to love the archipelago so deeply, that he now lives all year around in Houtskär. Besides his own week he is in charge of the kitchen.
When we took over Hotel and Restaurant Hyppeis värdshus for eight years ago, we had a clear vision: we wanted to offer food that is straightforwardly delicious and made from locally sourced ingredients as much as possible. This not only supports the local economy and farmers, but also to ensure that our guests experience the seasonal flavours the archipelago has to offer. As our restaurant has grown during the years, it hasn’t always been easy to find enough ingredients. Our area of locally produced ingredients has become bigger, but still main focus is on ingredients produced in Finland.
Each of our visiting chef bring their unique touch to the menu. The changing menu reflects a diverse range of styles and specialties, depending on their own culinary history and story. As our guest you can savour everything from traditional Finnish dishes with a modern twist to exotic flavours inspired by international cuisines. You might meet the chef from your favourite restaurant or like this summer, you’ll be able to travel to Paris with chef Marlo Snellman.
A visit to our restaurant should always be a holistic experience. Our wish is that you have a memorable evening at our restaurant, enhanced by a good selection of wines and other beverages. Friendly service and laid-back atmosphere are also very important to us, we want you be part of our happy summer family!
Whether you’re passing by boat, bike or car, or planning an overnight stay, we’re here for you. Book your accommodation or a table for dinner, +358 40 175 9880 or info@hotelhyppeis.fi and experience the unique charm of our place.
It’s important to note that while the visiting chef concept takes a pause on Mondays, the culinary journey does not. On Mondays we clean up the kitchen and make place for the next chef. The menu on Mondays typically reflects the previous week’s offerings. This way we avoid food waste, so there can be slight variations in the menu due to ingredients available.
We warmly welcome you to our place!

Are you looking for a place where you can relax, enjoy nature with easy activities and experience the authentic archipelago life? Then read further…
When I first time came to Houtskär, I found a place where the pace of life naturally slows down. Nestled far away in the archipelago, Houtskärs untouched nature offers a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. As I wandered through the forests, the only sound I heard was the rustling leaves underfoot, the distant call of a sea eagle, and the soft whisper of the wind.
One of my favourite activities is kayaking through the serene waters at dawn. It’s a magical experience that brings you closer to nature, and I can warmly recommend it. For those who prefer to stay on land, walking the roads and trails provides breathtaking views of the archipelago nature. If you’re lucky, you might spot a deer watching you curiously from the woods or fields.
If you’re looking for a place where your heart rate lowers, and your breathing aligns with the gentle flow of the wind, then Houtskär is a sanctuary waiting for you.
Adventures kayaking around Hyppeis mirror the serene beauty of the local archipelago’s waters. Each stroke with the paddle takes you closer to new wonders, from small islands to hidden coves. Paddling quietly along the shore line you’ll meet just watching you from the distance with curiosity.
If you don’t want to go kayaking, try stand-up paddleboarding! It offers a unique vantage point to appreciate the quiet beauty of the island, a peaceful experience that connected me deeply with the natural world. From the paddle board you’ll be able to get a good look at the boat houses in Hyppeis village. And paddle boarding is easier than you think!
Inspired by the beautiful surroundings around the village Hyppeis, you can walk along the small roads or take a hike to the forest. Each walk is a journey through authentic landscapes, where the silence is only broken by the rustle of leaves, the distant crash of waves or the local farmers driving his tractor. The air is so clean, that you can spot beard moss on the trees!
Riding the bike allows you to see more. You can bicycle from one island to another, exploring the small villages. Or maybe you want to visit the Näsby village, which is about seven kilometres distance from the hotel. Ride your bike through the scenic road with beautiful red wooden houses, visit the Boat museum, church and the guest harbour. The ride offers you a glimpse into the archipelago lifestyle that has remained unchanged for generations.
The climb to the Borgberg sightseeing tower is a journey, as reaching the top, you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking view that captured the essence of the archipelago’s splendor—a mosaic of land and sea, harmoniously intertwined. Borgberg is only two kilometres away from the Hotel, so an ideal walk before or after breakfast.
Our cozy accommodation is more than just an accommodation – it’s a place for rest and relaxation. You can take it easy in the garden, go for a walk or take an adventure out to the sea with kayak or SUP-board. We have both kayaks, SUP-boards and bicycles to rent. After a day of exploring the nature around Hotel Hyppeis, unwind in our sauna, swim under the midsummer sun or in the fall under the stars, and find the essence of tranquility.
I hope your journey at our place will be an exploration of nature’s quiet beauty and a testament to the restorative power of a slower pace of life.
For me it has been an experience that not only captured my heart but also inspired a profound appreciation for the simple, unspoiled beauty of the archipelago. Here, I felt a deep connection to the nature, a sense of peace that comes from being surrounded by the sea and the forest. In Houtskär, every moment is an invitation to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Welcome to my paradise,
Outi
PS. You can rent both bikes, kayaks and SUP-boards at our place, even when you’re not staying overnight at the hotel!

*Quote taken from the article in The Guardian (from 2021)
Kerran silmiini osui arvostelu, jossa illallistamme kritisoitiin kalliiksi. Harmitti, totta kai. Olisin halunnut kertoa kommentoijalle seuraavat asiat: lihan annokseesi kasvatti Johanna tai Kirsi naapurisaarilta, perunat sinulle viljeli naapurimme Niklas ja tomaatit istutti ja poimi Ragni. Olisin kertonut hänelle, että heidän on saatava palkka työstä, jota he tekevät aamusta iltaan, joskus jopa öisin (todellakin, perunantaimia kastellaan keväällä öisin, jos on hallanvaara). Olisin sanonut, että me tiedämme mistä raaka-aineet annokseesi tulevat.
Me laskimme, emmepä laske toiste.
040 175 9880.

Heitä on tänä kesänä kaikkiaan kahdeksan: Johannes Berlin, Erno Kemi, Patrik Lindström, Antti Asujamaa, Oona Bondestam, Matias Haapsaari, Kari Julin ja Markus Murtovaara. He tulevat vuorollaan saaristoon viikoksi, joten menyymme vaihtuu kesällä viikottain, aina juhannuksesta elokuun toiseksi viimeiselle viikolle. Aah, mikä elämys on päästä nauttimaan joka viikko uusia yllättäviä makuja!
Ihania elämyksiä, niitä me haluamme tarjota sinulle.
Tervetuloa!
